He serves as head team physician for University of North Carolina at Charlotte and as an orthopedic physician for several NASCAR teams. Outside of his clinical practice, Dr. Fleischli is also the director of OrthoCarolina's sports medicine fellowship program and a reviewer for American Journal of Sports Medicine. He holds memberships with American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and International Cartilage Repair Society, among other professional societies.

Dr. Fleischli earned his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

A new study from Keith Baar's Functional Molecular Biology Laboratory at the UC Davis College of Biological Sciences and the Australian Institute of Sport suggests that consuming a gelatin supplement, plus a burst of intensive exercise, can help build ligaments, tendons and bones. The study is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Connective tissue and bone injuries are common in both athletes and the elderly, and interfere with peoples' ability (and enthusiasm) for exercise, whether they are an elite athlete or just trying to lose weight and maintain fitness and flexibility. Steps that can prevent injury and enhance recovery are therefore of great interest.

1. This was Dr. Pirela-Cruz's 11th trip to Guatemala with the nonprofit Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation. The foundation offers specialized healthcare to residents with congenital hand conditions, burns and injuries.

In research conducted in rats, investigators have shown for the first time the effect of rotator cuff tendon overuse, or tendinopathy, on surrounding tissues.

Such overuse is among the major causes of shoulder pain and discomfort in athletes, laborers, older adults, and those who use a repetitive overhead motion in daily activities. Untreated tendinopathy can lead to full or partial rotator cuff tendon rupture, requiring orthopaedic surgery and a potentially long and painful recovery.

Over a 10-week period, both degeneration of the shoulder tendon and osteoarthritis-like changes to neighboring cartilage were observed.

The study may help clinicians determine the optimal type and timing of treatment for tendon overuse injuries to reduce further damage.
