Program Review
Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Schreiber is really one of the best things going for this program. Stern but a good teacher who honestly wanted to graduate excellent surgeons. Heming is also great, nice guy and good sports guy. I wasn't much of a fan of the other attendings styles (or lack there of), very condescending in my opinion and not great teachers.
Didactics / Teaching
Decent, straight out of the OKUs, lots of journal articles to read and review, overall pretty malignant morning sessions though. Not very many Xrays to read/review.
Operating Experience
Decent for Scopes and joints but most trauma leaves the hospital and there was no in-house hand guy and a F&A guy came every other week on Friday from Ann Arbor I think. The level of autonomy was really the best thing about the OR, terrible experience for med-students but the residents (that got to operate) got a good experience.
Clinic Experience
Private practice experience that ranged from mediocre to pretty good.
Research Opportunities
None that I saw and knowone seemed to have any interest when I inquired.
Residents
Personally I did not not get a long with many of them. I did not think it was a very cohesive group. The seniors were hard on the junior residents and the whole enviornment was very competitive. Residents were essentially fighting each other for cases from what I could see. A few of the guys were cool. Also, didn't see any women and kind of got the feel that it would be difficult for a woman to match, just an FYI, I could be wrong.
Lifestyle
Pretty poor, early mornings but it seemed like cases were done early quite a bit so you could make it to the gym if necessary.
Location / Housing
Terrible, I was not a fan of Grand Blanc nor Flint, MI. Very depressed with not a lot locally from what I could tell. Not that it matters becasue you would be busy but my wife would have had a tough time.
Limitations
You have to do out rotations in Trauma, F&A, Peds and Hand to round out a good experience but i think they were gettng these.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Not great; I was told I did excellent on the rotation and would get an interview for sure by one of the chiefs. When this did not turn out to be the case, I was a little shocked but then agian it wasn't in my top 3 either so you can take this with a grain of salt.
Qualification
I rotated as a medical student at this program
