Program Review

Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Dr. Kevin Black is the Chairman of Orthopedics. He is also Course director for the national academy meeting for resident education and this is clearly reflected in the programs dedication and attention to the resident experience. In addition to an academic focus, he has been very strict on protection from work hours abuse.<br />

Didactics / Teaching
Didactic teaching every morning with Attending presence.
Operating Experience
Extensive. Case logs are well above the national average
Clinic Experience
Very balanced and thorough. Our chiefs have matched very well in excellent fellowships.
Research Opportunities
Each resident is required to present 1 publishable journal quality research project by the time he/she graduates. Dr Catherine Ambrose heads up the orthopedic Research department and is very active in supporting resident research. Research funding and project ideas are readily available, and many residents choose to participate in multiple research projects.
Residents
They take 5 residents per year (not 2)
Lifestyle
Wonderful family community, 15 minutes from Harrisburg, and less than 2 hrs. form Baltimore, DC, or Philadelphia
Location / Housing
Excellent cost of living with the ability to own a home on a resident budget if desired.
Limitations
Limitations of this program in the past have all been erased by the hard work of the new Chairman, Dr. Lowe, and the Program Director, Dr. McGarvey. The UT Houston Ortho program that was once on probation, is now an up and coming superstar program. It is fully accredited, with a massive influx of new faculty, new ideas, and more positive changes on the way.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
Having rotated at 4 solid programs, I ranked this program first, and have not regretted it. The current status of the program is progressive and growing. Our cancer center was just completed last year. Our free standing pediatric hospital is slated for completion in 2012. The free standing Musculoskeletal Institute Outpatient complex complete with MRI/PT and ancillary services was completed 2 years ago and in full function.

Qualification

I am a current resident of this program.
