Program Review
Staff / Faculty / Chairman
Faculty were very engaging with medical students and actually remembered my name. I felt they were welcoming and enjoyed teaching. They gave me an opportunity in the OR and handed the drill after getting to know me.
Didactics / Teaching
Theres a morning conference almost daily. It was always led by the head of the department of each subspecialty. Definitely a strength here.
Operating Experience
As a medical student, I was able to scrub any case I wanted and was almost always helping suture when closing. I was impressed by how involved junior residents were in cases and the confidence they had operating. On trauma, the senior would run his own room with a junior.
Clinic Experience
It pretty much what you expect from clinic...
Research Opportunities
Not a research heavy program, but the chairman seems to be working on improving. Funding didnt seem like a problem for resident research.
Residents
I definitely felt welcomed and respected by the residents. They seemed like a very tightknit group and always hanging out together when not working. Probably 2/3rds of the guys were married, most upper levels had kids. The non-married guys seemed to definitely enjoy the nightlife of Chattanooga when they had weekends off.
Lifestyle
Chattanooga is a pretty cool city. Plenty of great restaurants and fun bars downtown and in the northshore area. Kinda reminded me of Austin in a smaller way. The river runs through the city with mountains on both sides so definitely an outdoorsy type city when it comes to peoples hobbies.
Location / Housing
Most residents live in the suburbs and the others lived in the northshore area close to the river and downtown.
Limitations
I didnt really come across any. I'd say most of the residents are from the southeast but looks like the PD and chairman want to add some diversity.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
I had a really fun time rotating. This program is sleeper but definitely a jewel in the south. I'd be very happy to end up here.

Program Review
Staff / Faculty / Chairman
the faculty seemed very helpful and wanted to teach. i felt very comfortable as a visiting student there. they new my name and tought in clinic and in cases. they will probably be getting a new chairman in the next few years through retirement but i doubt anything serious would change.
Didactics / Teaching
the lectures and teaching are very good, in my opinion. they also get very impressive guest speakers/grand rounds presenters who stick around to give lectures and comment on cases that the residents present.
Operating Experience
it seemed very good. usually just one resident and the attending on most cases, or just the residents on a more straightforward case (ex: tibia/femur IMN's, etc) with the attending checking in periodically. they have a trauma fellow who pretty much does cases with one of the attendings - mostly tabs and other more complex stuff. there is plenty of trauma to go around so i didn't get a feel that the fellow "steals" much experience from the residents on trauma
Clinic Experience
pretty nice. there is a more resident run clinic and an attending clinic, at least on trauma. there may be some differences between services. overall, i think they get pretty good clinical experience in managing patients on their own but it can be clinic dependent
Research Opportunities
there is a 3 or 4 month dedicated research rotation, i think 4th year. requirement for one "publishable" project while in residency. research is not a strongpoint but they do have resources available. most of the residents didn't seem like they wanted to do a lot of research.
Residents
very, very cool bunch of guys to hang out and work with. they watch out for each other and feel comfortable talking to upper levels. many of them live close to each other and spend time outside work hanging/working out, etc.
Lifestyle
very nice place to live. most of the senior residents had kids
Location / Housing
again, great downtown. nearly all, if not all, residents own houses - affordable. traffic is not a big problem.
Limitations
not a research super-power, which can be a good thing. they have a rotation 4th or 5th year in nashville which is probably going to go away in the next couple years as they expand their sports and joints service. i didn't spend any time on peds so i can't comment on that
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
really cool place. i ranked them #2 and would have been very happy to end up there.

Program Review
Staff / Faculty / Chairman
The attendings were outstanding. All were very interested in teaching and are also pretty young.
Didactics / Teaching
Daily lectures from 7:00-8:00 were very informative.
Operating Experience
People may worry about the amount of trauma one might see at a community program but the trauma load at UTC is pretty heavy.
Clinic Experience
Varied experience; subspecialty out-rotations provide us the traditional experience.
Research Opportunities
Most residents are involved in at least one research project and are encouraged to think of their own project to start.
Residents
The residents make this place special. They take pride in the fact that they all get along so well and fit in. There are no girls in this program so that may be a worry to some people.
Lifestyle
Chattanooga has plenty to offer in terms of entertainment, outdoor living and affordability. You are right in the middle of the mountains and a river runs right through the middle of the newly renovated downtown area.
Location / Housing
Affordable
Limitations
None
