I am not one to freak out but I just recieved a pass on my ortho elective from my home program which was completely unexpected. How bad is this in regards to how programs view applicants? I know home programs are more "generous" when it comes to giving out honors assuming that the student does what is expected of them.

Also I have the option of not including this grade on my MSPE and going with my away rotation but I was under the impression that it is the norm to include ones home program. To make it worse my LORs are taking forever to come in. Not a good way to start the week.

Any thoughts guys
A pass from a home program can be interpreted in a very negitive way by other programs. It can be viewed as an underhanded way that your program doed not endorse you as a future ortho resident. I would d/w the staff the reason for the pass to identify reasons for this grade. In interviews it wil definitely come up as topic of conversation. Good luck

I agree with the above post. Definitely go to the rotation director or ortho rotation director to discuss the reason behind the pass grade. When you apply, a pass is looked upon very unfavorable. Most of the Ortho applicants have all honors in their ortho rotation. Your ortho clinical grade is probably one of the most important grades that you can get... it's right up there with your 3rd year clinical grades.

Before you do anything rash, make sure your elective isn't pass/fail.

My home program only has pass/fail for electives so both my ortho grades were pass.

I didn't have any of my fourth year grades included in either my transcript or deans letter so noone knew what I received in my ortho aways and I was not asked. I think the compilation of third year/letters gave programs a good idea. Therefore, if you can suppress this grade, I would do so.

I echo checkraiser's comment. My school only gave pass/fail grades for 3rd/4th year electives, and it never came up during interviews.

If your school is only pass/fail it obviously won't be a big deal. If it has high honors/honors/etc. then unfortunately if will probably come up. I would personally talk to the PD of your program to figure out what went wrong.

I got a grade of high pass on my home subI after honoring most 3rd year rotations. Any thoughts on how this will impact my application? Should I include this on ERAS transcript and MSPE?

It appears to be a big deal...having been someone in your situation, I would not include it on ur tanscript or MSPE if you have that option especially if you have other 4th year ortho electives. Try to get this changed if you can and act fast..because once those transcripts are on ERAS any updates might not completely erase the old records.

after meeting with my program director, i have learned that a pass is considered a red flag and could be interpreted as a programs way of stating that they do not think orthopaedics is a good fit for you. for a high pass, he said to just be prepared with an answer as to how you could have done better on the rotation. high pass not a big deal, but obviously not as good as honors. Pass=big problems for interviews, "red flag".

The problem is that this was my first subI so if I don't include this on my transcript, then there will be no other away grades. Should I still not include it on ERAS and MSPE?

i included my high pass on my transcript, it was my only ortho subI so far, and i don't think it has hurt me at all cause i got an interview at case on 11/3. if the rest of your app is strong it won't matter.

Was just wondering about this. How do PD know about grades (honors etc) on away rotations since for some schools only one grade (usually from the home program) gets reflected on the transcripts and MSPE. Do they ask applicants this on the interview day or is it only applicable to the programs where the rotation was done?
