Hello

I've got a quick question for everyone that I haven't been able to answer through FRIEDA or program website. I am considering scheduling my wedding for the first weekend of June, 2011. My school graduation is the following weekend. I am concerned as I have spoken to a couple of my classmates 1 year ahead of me who are graduating this upcoming June, who say their programs are actually starting before our mid-June graduation. Is this common, or is this common in Ortho? Recommendations?

Thanks-R

I don't know of any programs that start before mid-june. Most start the last week of June, maybe the last week and a half.

I got married June 20th last year and it worked fine... but if I'd matched at one of my programs which started the week before, I'd've been hosed. You should be safe in the first week.

Why get married then? Is it age? You want to have kids?

I havemt done it, an im no expert.. But your 1st and second year of ortho will be time intensive.. And id imagine not the best for the honeymoon period..

Thats at least what i think... Imore curious than anything else about that specifix timing in ur life (id like to get married someday... Having a gf would help, but lets not get carried away

I'm in the same boat, dude. The future wifey is also an MSIII, so we set our date for the last weekend in April so that we wouldn't get hosed. On the bright side, you could save some cash having it early, since spring is cheaper than June. In any case, good luck to you and the future Mrs.

Sounds good - Thanks for the advice. From speaking with others outside of this forum, it sounds pretty variable. There are certainly some, although very few, program that start before mid-June. If any of you know any specific program that start before say the third Monday in June, I'd love to know.

For the most part, in my understanding the academic year begins July 1st. that being said some programs are able to stretch it to the last week of June saying that they'll give a week off at the end of intern year or at the end of residency (making it up somehow... i'll believe it when i see it). The reason people are "starting" before that is because every program requires you to have certain training in order to begin working as a doctor. My program required us to be ACLS and ATLS certified, coupled with the mandatory GME training/orientation, we were required to report June 15th.

In my opinion most programs will understand a wedding or some significant life event and be able to work with you (i've seen people pay for ACLS and ATLS on their own, or take them while still a med student for free at their own programs in order to work around this for much more trivial reasons).

Basically, you should be able to work around things, in my opinion...
