This highly specialized fellowship prepares trainees for a focused niche practice in comprehensive hip surgery. Fellows with academic interests benefit from the strong research program, based in a collaborative learning environment. The fellowship is ideally suited for trainees graduating from a prior sports medicine or adult reconstruction fellowship, who wish to obtain further training in a secondary subspecialty program. However, application is also open to exceptional graduating residents.

TRIA is offering two one-year Sports Medicine & Shoulder fellowship positions for academic year 2024-2025 (August to July).
The fellowship program was founded in 1987. The founder and first director was David A. Fischer, MD. The program grew to two fellows in 1990, and then to three fellows in 1997. There are 89 graduates as of July 2022. While the brick and mortar have changed over the years, the faculty’s commitment to education and surgical training has not. The faculty are proud of our history and committed to continue providing a high level of fellowship training.
2024 Unique Adult Reconstruction Fellowship
The Bone and Joint Center at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital
Our fellowship in Pittsburgh, PA combines core clinical training in adult reconstruction surgery coupled with training in multidisciplinary bone and joint health programs targeted at reducing disparities for patients and providers.
The fellowship includes clinical training in the diagnosis, evaluation and management of degenerative, rheumatoid and post-traumatic arthritis of the hip and knee. Surgically, fellows are exposed to a high volume of primary THAs (Anterior approach, posterior approach, superior approach ) and TKAs (50% robotics, 50% conventional). Fellows also have a high exposure to revision hip and knee arthroplasty. The fellowship also includes a large number of complex primary joint reconstruction for skeletal dysplasias.
