Hi everyone I am a rising 4th yr trying to figure out my aways. I was hoping for some advice...

Pre clinical yrs p/f
Step 1 261
3rd yr so far Medicine-HP OB-H Psych-H Surg-H
AOA TBD
Female
Four manuscript pubs, 3 ortho, no first authorship
1st author on a poster presentation coming up-non ortho
involved in an ortho project currently
several clubs/extracurrics

I go to a mid tier top 40 NYC area school and from what I can tell no one has matched/gotten an interview at HSS in years. Is it worth it to try for it or should I use an away for a place that would more likely take me... but that would definitely take away any shot.

Just a 4th year here, but my opinion is that strong candidates such as yourself should do aways (and rock them) at programs they want to go to regardless of perceived competitiveness. If HSS is that place for you then go for it. With your step score and research I doubt you will have any trouble matching somewhere, provided there are no major red flags in your file.
