I can answer your question since I'm a chief at Tufts now. For 3 months at New England Baptist we don't take call at all. Chiefs effectively function as fellows, except we make the OR schedules. At Newton-Wellesley (our community hospital experience) call is Q4. For 6 months at Tufts Medical Center chief call is Q2. But keep in mind, I'm overseeing the upper level backup resident as needed, and only come in for chief level cases.
For our entire residency after intern year, Tufts is home call.
As for OR, we are a very operative heavy program with the exception of 3 months as a PGY-2. Case loads should be around 2,000 without logging closed reductions or ER procedures. As a PGY-2, the attendings will let you operate as long as you know what you're doing. By chief year, you're expected to complete most trauma and general cases independently. That being said, attendings are there when you need them and I never felt stranded.
