I'm thinking about rotating at the St. Mary's program in San Francisco. I heard it was on probation. Anyone know if this is true? I'd like to figure out if it's even worth my time...

Good question. A resident posted that they were to be under review last year, but they are still on the probation list.

our status is to be determined in the coming months.

Whatever the result, I can guarantee you no finer orthopaedic education. We operate a ton, we crush the OITE's, and we have a very good time doing it. 100% satisfied. The reasons we were on probabtion, not to go into detail, with minimal exception, were, frankly, absurd.

Osocarioca,

Young grasshopper, you have so much to learn. The Orthopedic RRC cares nothing of such petty things such as OITE scores, volume of operative experience, or quality of graduates from particular programs. That would be no way to guage the quality of a program. There are far more important issues to worry about when considering the value of a program. It is all very complicated - we probably wouldn't understand it anyway. Just rest assured that they never have any political motives for their actions, and they only have the residents' education in mind when they make their defeciency lists.

Any updated news? Per the ACGME website, they had a site visit in Aug 2009.

Also, from what I gather, the program has been under probation since 2006. Can anyone offer any insight?

Thanks!

i am sure that the reasons that SF would be on probation is purely political that it comes down to the fact that someone has a stick up their butte and doesn't like the fact that programs can provide residents an educational environment where they get a great surgical experience, have strong didactics (which is supported by high OITE scores and exceptional board pass rate), and actually have a life and enjoy the attending with whom you work...now that would not be residency...I only have a tainted view coming from a program who lost to the vulchers....

Does anyone know if this program is in need of a 2, 3, or 4 resident?

Thanks for the info. Do you know of any other programs that are looking to fill a year?
