Well, I now have had time to digest my USMLE step 1 score and I am pretty unhappy with it, 226/92. I really though I was going to much better since my qbank score (70%) and released item score (81% and shelf exam grade (average for all of them was 76)) were comparable to others who have scored in the 240 range. Now my question is with a score of 226/92 are my chances of matching in a NYC orthopaedic residency severely diminished and what can I now do to increase my chances. Any advice will be truly appreciated.

Although I have no advice, Howzit made a couple of good points in the post above. Ive talked to a couple of people applying this year, and with a score in the 220s, you have to work a bit harder to land a spot but it can be done. You dont necessarily have to turn water into wine.

Re: step 1, I totally feel you man. I had similar stats to you going in and I feel I got gyped. Some of my buddies, who had the same stats as us going in rocked the thing, which makes me feel even more gyped. But I think if you are going to split hairs over a couple of points, it boils down to test day performance, and whether or not you got crap questions or not. I definitely felt really anxious for the first two blocks, so I know for a fact, I made a lot of serious errors then. But, whats done is done. Next step: Sit down with my department chair to see where I can go from this point. Stuff sucks when it doesnt go your way
