Hey all,

I am an MS3 and am trying to decide between Ortho and Urology...I like orthopedics better in every way except it's nice in Uro that as you get older you can do more and more clinic time with more medical management and spend fewer hours in the OR.

Is there and ortho parallel to this? What do ortho guys do in there 60s and 70s when they can do hips and knees all day??

I guess more broadly, what is practicing ortho going to be like throughout the entirety of the career?

Thanks!

First of all, I would tell you to retire well before you are 70 so you can enjoy some life after orthopedics. However, if you choose to work then, it will be dependent upon your clinic situation. Some clinics will allow a transition period into more of a nonoperative roll. Usually, there would be a change in compensation as well. I have had partners that have worked normally into their mid 60s and nearly 70 with a normal schedule until they retired.
