Hey guys I have a couple of questions as far as setting up away rotations. My periods are:

Period 1 (July 4-29): Study month for boards
Period 2 (Aug 1-26)
Period 3 (Aug 29-Sep 23)
Period 4 (Sep 26-Oct 21)
Period 5 (Oct 24-Nov 18 )
Period 6 (Nov 21-Dec 16)
Period 7 (Jan 2-Jan 27)
Period 8 (Jan 30-Feb 24)
Period 9 (Feb 27-Mar 23)
Period 10 (Mar 26-Apr 20)

I have a mandatory 1 month Primary Care and 1 month Geriatrics rotation (both are with docs that I know extremely well and would not mind if I left for interviews). I also have a 1 month mandatory Cardio rotation, and and 1 month mandatory ER rotation. The ER rotation consists of 17 12-hour shifts spread out at your preference over 1 month. My main questions are which periods should I schedule my ortho rotations? Also, do you guys think its best to do your top choices first or last? Would it be beneficial to schedule those rotations in which my attending would allow me to leave to take interviews during interview season? Any advice is appreciated.

July, August, and September are the months when most people do away rotations. You can do them later but it will be difficult to get your letters in. I made my schedule so that I was off from Thanksgiving to the beginning of February for interviews. It's been awesome.

Thanks for the reply. Is October too late? When does the interview season officially begin?

The majority of programs have a november 1st application deadline but there are a handful with Oct. 1st, 15th, and other dates in october. If you are counting on a letter from your away rotation to send to those programs you will miss the deadline. But if you have enough letters already then you will be fine. Decide which situation you are in, which programs you want to apply to, and go from there.

OK thanks for the great information. Definitely gives me an idea of where to go from here. Thanks!
