Hi everyone,

Quick Question, I'm a textbook guy, I learn best from text, and was just wondering if anyone could help me pick out a good Pharm book. Right now, I'm trying to decide between Lipincott's Pharm and Pharmacology by H.P Rang. I've heard a lot of good things about Rang, but others have told me Lipincott's is all I need for the boards. Any feedback on either of these books or other suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Personally, I would recommend getting/borrowing Basic & Clinical Pharmacology by Bertram Katzung. I had the Lippincott's text and it was good for an overview of everything. However, when I was working through Qbank, I had to reference Katzung a lot. It has the need-to-know info on each drug in a quick hit format. Plus, I would read through sections at a time when I was really confused with a specific drug class.

Overall, pharm is not too heavy on Step 1. I remember spending a whole day tackling the anti-arrhythmia drugs and NONE were asked. I was also really worried about Pharm the days before the exam as I felt like I had short-changed this section of the test.... things worked out and I don't regret spending the extra time on path.

Best of Luck,

I just took Step 1 a month ago and my advice is to know the pharm section of First Aid cold before reading a full review book. Like WIScite, I didn't think Pharm was a big component of the test. I think reading a whole textbook is way overkill. However, a bunch of my friends used BRS pharm cards and really liked them. The back of Katzung has a 10 pg. high yield pharm review that is good as well.

i took step 1 last year, had a lot of pharm. best advice is to know first aid cold. (agree with the others on that one). reading other books may waste valuable study time and you will get only minimal high yield stuff from it.
