I understand that it is best to get LORs from big names. Who are some big names in orthopedics? Who has worked with and gotten a LOR from a big named doc? The only big name I know if is Jimmy Andrews in Alabama.

I want personal history of, "I got a letter from... and the programs I interviewed at were flipping out about it." If you feel like you dont want to call too much attention to someone you know, please pm me. Thanks

What I'm looking for is some big name west of the mississippi that I could possibly work with at an Away. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Since you seem to be plenty chummy with "Jimmy" Andrews, I would go ahead and get a letter from him.

A LOR from someone who knows you well will still carry more weight than a generic letter from a "big name". You should consider doing away rotations at places at which you would be interested in training. You don't have to have the author of a famous textbook writing your letters. You would be surprised how many connections less well known people have.

The other funny thing about the original post is that James Andrews is largely in FL now. I would agree huge names aren't that important. Get a good letter from an academic surgeon and they will be well known enough
