They take 5 per year as of a couple years ago. The program is based out of Erie County Medical Center which is the local trauma center. They get a decent amount of trauma there given that the only other level 1 in western NY is Strong Memorial hospital in Rochester. The residents also rotate at Buffalo General Hospital (where you get to operate with Dr. Krackow and a handful of other guys) and Women and Childrens Hospital of Buffalo. I don't know how the current chief class did in terms of fellowship placement, but the last class had two guys go to Mayo clinic - one for joints and one for UE (both of them went back to work in Buffalo). Throughout the program they have all subspecialties covered each with at least a couple guys - except just one in tumor I believe. They have a night float system when you're rotating on trauma at ECMC which gets pretty busy. When you're at Womens and Childrens Hospital of Buffalo you cover call there separately - it is a level 1 for peds and they stay pretty busy there, esp during the summer from what I hear. You do a dedicated spine rotation at Buffalo general with Dr. Hamill and you get some spine at ECMC as well. The PD (Mutty) and Chairman (Bone, yeah his name is Dr. Bone) are both trauma guys although Dr. Bone doesn't operate anymore really. Buffalo is a super cheap city to live in, so a residents salary affords you a decent house with some spare change. It is much more like the midwest than any city in the east in terms of the population and peoples' personalities. If you have any specific questions beyond that I'll do my best.
