Does anyone know if the statistics on the number of cases logged by residents in various programs are public? Is it possible to get them, maybe from ACGME, or maybe from the individual programs? And what about the OITE scores? Seems like this would be pretty useful in comparing residencies.

I'd caution you about using OITE scores to compare programs. It's kinda like using Step 1 scores to compare medical students during interviews. I don't know if OITE scores are published (ie public), but some programs I interviewed at bragged about their OITE scores. Some programs have a structured, weekly OITE conference, which I would think would affect your scores....but does that really make you a better orthopaedic surgeon, or make your residency better? I don't think so. From what I've heard from some of the seniors at my program, the only thing the OITE does is tell you if you are at risk for failing the boards (if you do poorly on it during your 4th and 5th years). For the most part, fellowships don't care about your OITE scores either.

Case logs might be a little more useful, in terms of helping you decide on a program....if you want one with lots of hands on stuff vs one with more didactics. Don't know if they're public. But you'll probably get a sense of that during interviews. I would think that county programs and major level 1 trauma centers probably operate a lot more (at least doing traumas...but maybe fewer subspecialty stuff). And you can always ask the program too. Remember though, lots of operative cases don't necessarily mean its good if you don't have someone who knows what they're doing (ie attending) taking you through the case.
