Have probably put this issue off too long. Applying for ortho this year, my school does not have a home orthopaedics program. I have secured 4 letters of recommendation, but have not sent them to any programs yet.

1 from the chairman of my home general surgery program, very high profile (although I realize this means little in ortho)
1 from a high profile ortho from an away rotation
2 from well respected ortho group from my home area.

Does the general surgery letter qualify as a charman's letter since we don't have a home program? Should I ask a chairman or a residency director at a program I did an away at to fulfill this requirement? The general surgery chairman letter would be a better and more personable letter, I'm sure. Or am I set at this point?

We (Program Directors) are all aware that there are still a few schools without a viable orthopaedic program. In those cases, at least in my program, we have no problem accepting your general surgery Chair's letter as the 'Chairman's' letter.

I got a letter from a faculty member, who sent it to me 'for my records' after he submitted it to ERAS. It is a good letter, but I am wondering about the last sentence of the LoR.

"Darkshooter was a very clean-cut, well-dressed medical student. He always appeared well-rested and did not seem to be a substance abuser"

I have no idea why he put that line in there, I have never used drugs or anything in my whole life. This guy trained during the 70's, but I'm not sure if this type of line is standard in a LoR. I feel like some may see it as an odd statement, whereas others may ignore it.

I really want to use this letter because it is from an away, but before I assign it to programs I was hoping for some input, especially from the Program directors on these forums. Thanks!
