Hey everybody, so I am an FMG and am just looking for some advice as to what anyone thinks my chances are for this coming up match. A little about myself:

I am a medical student about half way through 3rd year looking to apply in september.
Medical School: St. George's University SOM
USMLE step 1: 254
USMLE step 2: Taking this in a few months, really aiming for 260
honors: Chancellors list (4.0gpa in basic science)for year 1
Deans list (3.5 gpa in basic science) all terms
IEA honor society (just an inside club for SGU students)
Class rank: top 5% on end of basic science sgu exam. top 10% for
basic science gpa
Research: 3 case reports submited, hoping to get accepted working on 4 more now. I am also inventing a piece of medical equipment. i am the sole contributor for the clinical usefulness and intellectual property opportunity. patent application is underway

Volunteer exerpeince: 2 surgery centers during summers the last two years. one orthopods private practice the summer before med school. and a chronic pain clinic for about 10 years.

some other stuff: creating a student mentor program at the hospital i work at for the incoming 3rd year students. gave a lecture to first semester medical students at sgu on how to study. tutored alot of biochem, molec, anatomy, embryology while i was in med school.

Should hopefully earn all As in my clerkships. Hoping on honors for IM and surgury. Got some good people ill be working with to get letters of rec in the next month or two. and hopefully being invited by my dean to give a lecture to the kids back at sgu about how 3rd year is like and how to prep for step 1. and i have an 8 week audition elective booked at a hospital with a community program. Hoping to rock that.

So basicly, any advice from anyone would be helpful. I want to match ANYWHERE and plan on pretty much applying everwhere. Being an FMG the odds are against me but i cant let that prevent me from following my dreams. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

thing is, i wasnt a good student in highschool, always wanted to be a doc like my dad but just lost my focus. Around senior year my dad told me about this 7 year program SGU offered. Didnt have alot of confidence at the time so i decided to go for it. Since the first day out of highschool iv been giving it my all and just trying to work as hard as i can.

Well first of all good luck. You clearly have been giving it your all- looks like you are a straight beast on paper. If it wasn't for your FMG status you would competitive at the tier 1 programs. although though in this twisted match game we play, FMGs are the ones getting screwed more and more.

A few more questions: are you a U.S. citizen? Ie did you just go there for medical school or are you from another country? Do you have any contact with ortho mentors in the states? Are you doing your rotations here, and if so, do you have the opportunity to do ortho rotations? I have heard of some FMGs beign able to in effect take 6 months of electives, could you do 6 ortho months?

1. yes i am a US citizen. Born and raised in the bay area, CA
2. I know a ton of ortho guys in the bay area, but they are all at california schools which i strongly doubt will even give me an interview. So i am just really counting on getting help from the ortho team at hackensackUMC where i am doing my rotations. So short answer, not really.
3. i am doing all 3rd year rotations at HUMC in new jersey and all 4th year rotations at hospitals in new jersey.
4. im allowed 16 weeks of electives but i have only 8 of those in ortho. i wont finish my last core rotation till end of august so i signed up all september and october for ortho electives. the other 8 weeks i have radiology and anesthesia. I tried to get these to be ortho but wasnt able to schedule them. At SGU we have to be our own registrar and schedule everything on our own which is pretty cumbersome. so i really am just hoping on the one 8 week rotation i have at a community-program in new jersey. The cheif ortho resident when im doing my audition is an SGU grad so i am hoping i can really prove to them im capable of being worthy.

Really i dont care where i get into. Being in jersey would be nice, however, matching into any program in the country would be an absolute blessing. Although there are a lot of specialties iv enjoyed, this is the only one which i have a real passion for. I wish i could do more audition electives but the interview decisions would already most likely be made by the time i could do them. Thank you for showing interest. Appreciate it.

Since you're looking at jersey programs, I'll throw this in: I would think twice if you're considering a rotation at Monmouth. I know an FMG with great stats who rotated there for a month and didn't get an interview.

You probably have already considered this, but 8 weeks at one program is really putting all of your eggs in one basket. If it's not too late, can you spend 4 weeks somewhere else?

Additionally, keep trying to move one of those radiology and/or anesthesiology to an ortho rotation. People move/cancel ortho rotations (not a lot, but it happens), so maybe you can slide into an opening somewhere.

hey, good advice, im working on switching those to ortho. As for monmouth, called them already, said they dont interview FMG for ortho spots so no point in rotating there. Thanks for the advice none the less, appreciate it.

No. He went into another field. I can't speak as to how many programs he applied, nor do I know how many interviews he was offered. Wish I could give you more info.

Hi 2, as you've talked about any advice... So if I were at your place then I would go for seeking admission in The Medical School at Harvard University... Why you do not apply for it?
