If a program allows you to give 4 LOR from anyone you want, are most of you giving all 4 letters from orthopaedic surgeons or 3 + 1 from a non-ortho doc? From what I hear, it seems like most of the faculty who read the letters look to see if they know/recognize the letter writer before giving it a serious look, so I was thinking of sending 4 ortho letters to programs that allow it.

Any input from residents on what they submitted when they were in the same situation is appreciated. Thanks.

I only submitted ortho letters. Programs pretty much do look to see if they know the person who wrote your letter.

I would only submit a non-ortho letter if a program requires it, or if it's a general surgery letter where the attending is saying that you're one of the best students he's ever had and wants you to marry his daughter.
