I am a 3rd year in school in the South and am curious about how difficult it is to obtain an interview at Colorado in Denver, let alone a residency. From speaking with friends who are from the Rockies, I have the impression that they "like their own". However, glancing at the Ortho program website I see that all of their PGY1 are from schools outside of CO. Does anyone have any useful info on the matter? Do my numbers have to be superhuman to even consider it as an option, being from the South?

Much Thanks,
JF

I can't offer too much info except that on the same webpage it says that UC students and all rotators are guaranteed interviews. This may somewhat support what you've heard. I likewise have heard the rumors that it's tough to break in at UC. I'm sure regionalism has a part in all of it.

I have a friend at UCHSC. He said that they like to match people that they know. They get so many applications because of location/lifestyle that they screen out all non-rotators with average numbers. They usually match one Colorado student and one non-rotator.

Thanks for the replies. I'll just have to rotate there and do my best to impress. I think they could use a little southern influence out there in the Rockies.

What role does their probationary status play in your decision, or anyone's for that matter? I am not sure I understand what they are on probation for, what they need to fix by November (their next review), and what happens if they don't fix it. If anyone could help me out, I would appreciate it.

Should applicants be deterred by their recent probation? Also can anyone clear up the rumor that Colorado's program attracts highly competitive applicants largely because of location, but when compared to other competitive programs they are lack luster? Thanks.

I rotated there so I can make a few comments on what I experienced. First of all, I did NOT get the feeling that "Colorado only likes their own"...only one of the four spots go to a CU student and that's not a guarantee. There appears to be a geographical bias, as in most programs because there are not many residents from the East. Colorado does, however, interview all rotators and CU students--I personally think that these courtesy interviews are a waste of everyone's time, but that's just me. I found Colorado to be a solid program now that D'Ambrosia has stabilized it. They appeared to be weak in Foot and Ankle but very strong in all other aspects. Overall, Colorado, as a state, seems to be a big draw to almost everyone there--how can it not be?

For 2005 UCHSC matched 3 of 4 from CU, and would have matched all four had he not gone elsewhere. D'Ambrosia takes people he knows and values high scores and AOA. The program claims they are seeking to be Top 10 Program with completion of their new medical center. However, I urge those of you interested to bone up on your push-ups if you've seen Wade Smith in action on TLC "Trauma Life in the ER"
