I'm a 3rd year. I got a 208 on step I. My first two years are just pass...I had medical problems which are now resolved after a tough time and a medical leave.

I AM ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED WITH PEDIATRIC ORTHO!! I've shadowed some gen ortho docs, and some ped ortho physicians in the past few summers and I just love the combination of ortho and kids...you can change so much...its such a privalege.

My question is ...I would like to start getting an idea as to how to plan my away electives.

Could someone please tell me which programs in the midwest are partial to rotators...and additionally, which programs weigh their experience with a rotator heavily...to the point that one could assure the PD of one's talent/work ethic, that perhaps is not as convincing on paper. Peds ortho is definetely something I have to do. How can i go about it?

which programs are known to be empathetic to students with past difficulties?

then what? I create a list of these programs and start calling? ask how to schedule an away with them? do they filter students for away electives, or do I just need to show an interest? How do I build a relationship with 'important' people? I understand that I at this point don't have the grades so I'm trying to do everything that I can now and in the future.

could someone please give me a list of midwest or even eastcoast programs that are partial to rotators? and another question I have is that if they give you an interview, then your chances are pretty decent, ? correct? programs can only give a limited number of interviews, right? i'm not sure? would n't it be a waste of time to give an inteview to someone who you know you won't take at all?

in the list of programs, could you include with an asterisk or something , programs that will guarantee you an interview if you rotate with them? and then how to I go about rotating with them?

thanks so much

I would highy consider rotating at one of the Akron Programs. SUMMA and Akron General are both highly laid back programs and they would be more willing to look at the total person rather than just numbers. Akron has a killer Peds hospital and about 5 peds ortho guys that are all steller. I cannot enough emphasize how great the peds experience was at this place. Akron General and Summa are both very similiar programs and you work with a lot of the same attendings at both places, so I would not ratoate at both.

Basically, you will be better off looking at community programs. Academic places tend to be more number hungry and care more about grades and research. Community places, while giving great training, tend to emphasize fit more and you will be evaluated more on how you work with the program. NOw these are not hard and fast rules just general stereotypes. Some of the top community programs are becoming very competitive and are just as desireable as the university places.

I would also recomend some research and busting your but on your 3 year clerkships. Your pre clinical grades do not matter that much, but your third year grades are money. If you honored a lot and had some research --- and had some strong ortho letters you could get back in the game.

I would also advise taking step II early and doing very well....
Thats about all I can say....and dont be too annoying calling programs all the time....you can start setting up aways in march, april, may....most are not too competeitive to get and are usually first come first served...so be early but dont start calling in december...

Feel free to PM for more specific info that I do not care to broadcast over the general airwaves.
