This has been rehashed in various threads, but I wanted to ask about a few other options for electives to take to help with intern year. I hear a general philosophy of not overworking during 4th year because you'll work plenty intern year ... but if I have to take electives, they might as well be useful. Here are some I've heard so far:

Radiology - gen. agreement that this is a useful & relaxed elective, good for end of year

Rheumatology - same here, although I would guess radiology would be have a slight edge if your school is thin on radiology as mine is

SICU - I know this is good for a ward requirement

MICU - is this any good if you can't get a SICU?

Cardiology - someone mentioned this is good since as an intern, you are most lost when called to deal with a cardiac emergency ... but wouldn't you get more of that kind of experience with MICU?

Are there any other nice relaxed electives that would be good to help ease into intern year? A lot of people say when you get tossed in the water, you'll sink or swim ... but it's definitely nicer to have a good foundation to stand on.

Thanks,
b

Trying to think of my senior year electives in addition to ortho.

SICU - helpful to learn line placements and managing critically injured patients which you will probably do during the internship year.

Radiology - spend most of the time with the musculoskeletal guys looking at CTs and MRIs. Very helpful with shoulder and knee MRI interpretation. Also done by 2 or 3 every afternoon.

Rheumatology - useful to see this side of orthopedics. Helps you know what stuff to refer to them.

Anesthesia - good during interviews - meaning, no patients to follow, so easy to take time off to do interviews without having to get someone to cover your patients.

Advanced Gross Anatomy - informal dissections at will at any time- it was awesome.

Medicine SubI at VA - I think this was required. Very helpful for learning basic call issues such as chest pain, SOB, etc.. which are very common calls during your intership year. I also had to do six weeks of medicine at the VA as an intern so it was smooth sailing the second time around.

Emergency Medicine - not a bad idea if you can monopolize seeing ortho-type patients...i found the ER residents were psyched i was there to deal with them. Also, you can get practice suturing, casting, lines, all things you need to learn.
You'll probably have to do 4 shifts/ week, but work hard when you're there. I spent some time seeing medicine issues, because it wasnt' a big trauma center. Overall valuable educational experience.
