My SO, soon to be spouse, is matching a year ahead of me. How receptive would programs be to interviewing a fairly well-rounded applicant, (250-255 step, H/HP preclinical and clinical, slightly below average research, good personality/not weird, no letters yet but all clerkship feedback so far has been outstanding), if their spouse is a resident in the same city? I would also try to do as many aways near her as possible. Obviously this is an extremely competitive process and nothing is guaranteed, but I'd like to know if this is a factor programs would at least consider when giving II's.

Like you said, it's competitive and unpredictable but you already mentioned the important stuff:

Good step 1.
Good clerkship grades.
Do aways near her/her location.

Don't be afraid of letting programs know about your SO so your chances of getting an interview there is increased. This has helped at least 3 couples that I know of over the last two years. If you do aways near her and kill it on your aways, some surveys have showed the chance of matching at home or aways is as high as 60-70%.

Just as a warning: on one of my aways an attending asked me why I chose to rotate there. I started my response with "my girlfriend..." and he immediately cut me off and told me never to say that again haha. Your best bet would be to rotate at her program and surrounding programs and kill it. Then when you get an interview, you list all the reasons under the sun why you love that program and before you leave the door you can say AND my gf is a resident here and matching here would be a great opportunity for us blah blah.
