Hi all. I'm an MS-III looking at scheduling away rotations and I had a quick question that I can't seem to find an answer to elsewhere. We all know that going to a big name program helps you if you'd like to go into academics, but what about private practice? Assuming you can still find a fellowship, is there any difference in post-residency private practice opportunities coming from a big name academic place vs a smaller academic or community program? Put another way, is it easier to find a job in a specific region of the country you'd like to be in coming from a smaller program in that area or a big-name program somewhere else?

I'm not sure if I'd want to go into private practice or academics at this point, but I'd like to keep my options open both ways.

Also interested in thoughts on this. From what I can tell, nearly every program places residents into their desired fellowships, even the lesser-known community ones. Seems like fellowship placement shouldn't even be a factor in the comparison. What are the benefits of going big name?

Not all no name programs match well in fellowships. If you look at fellowship matches, you'll notice that no name programs in the same area as Big Names match into the Big Names fairly consistently, but this is less true for more geographically isolated no name programs.

I think location is just as important as Big Name. Big Name gives you some added flexibility in location, in case you want to find a job across the country. The location that you trained for residency is still huge though, especially if you go to a no name program. People in the private sector like to hire locally if they can.
