I’m a current resident at JPS and am glad to answer any questions you might have. In brief JPS is a county hospital and level 1 trauma center serving Tarrant County and much of west Texas. Our peds rotation is at Cook Childrens which is 5 min down the street. We take 4 residents per year with a mix of rotators and non rotators. All specialties are well represented and trauma is definitely emphasized (we do 3 months every year). We cover all ortho trauma, hand, and spine call all the time because there are no fellows or neuro/plastics residents. We emphasize operative autonomy and you can expect to be doing diaphyseal work (nails, forearms, etc) skin to skin as the primary surgeon (not holding sticks) as a 2 and 3 and articular work (pilons, plateus, acetabulum, etc) starting as a 3 and into years 4 and 5. As a 2 on joints you will get to do TKAs and THAs skin to skin starting from day 1 with staff there to walk you through it. This level of early operative experience is characteristic of the program. There are resources (cadaver lab, biomechanics lab with MTS machine, research faculty, etc) to support resident research and most of us complete 2-3 projects while in residency. Overall JPS is a blue collar program and a great fit for those who want to work hard and get early operative experience and autonomy. There is a good mix of residents who are single, married, and married with kids. Fort Worth is a great city with tons of things to do (trinity trail for running/biking, Sundance square and west 7th for restaurants/bars/shopping/movies, the FW zoo, colonial golf course, and TCU right down the street. Residents and faculty like to hang out outside of work at all of the above locations as well as playing basketball. I hope that helps you have a better idea about our program. Feel free to message me with any other specific questions.
