So I am going to be trying to match in Ortho next year, and there is not much info out there when it comes to the Ortho match process for IMG's.
So if there are any IMG's out there, could you provide your thoughts on the process? Some challenges you came across and how you got around it. Programs perspective on IMGs ect.

Also if maybe some of you american grads ran into and talked to IMGs on the trail and they possibly offered some insights on the process for them could you share their thoughts and possibly your own opinions as well.

The reason why I posted on here is because it seams as though this forum is really one of the best at giving good advise.

I feel like I will be a competitive applicant with my step 1 score as 254/99. Also location of the program doesn't really matter much to me, so I will probably apply to every ortho program because I honestly really don't wanna go into any other specialty. Does it seem like I may have a realistic shot at matching? Any thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Are you Caribbean IMG or from elsewhere? Either way you can expect to not get a lot of interviews. I did my first two years in the carib and then transferred to a US school. Same exact Step 1 score as you. Only got 7 interviews. The truth is that when every applicant has scores and grades from US schools, program directors need a way to thin the herd. Foreign med school is an easy way to do that. They say, "Oh we can't find a way to compare your basic science classes to those of US students." It's a total cop out in my opinion. My carib past was talked about in every single interview.
Sorry to say, but it's gonna be a tough road. IMG is a curse. But you have to do it if you can't see yourself in another field. Try to rotate at a few programs, maybe you can change their minds. Look into programs that have an IMG. Drexel has a few residents who transferred from carib to US so they may be more sympathetic. Also, do everything you can think of to boost your application, research, extracurriculars, etc. Good luck to you. PM me if you have any questions.

I go to a small, private school in Georgia. We had several students transfer in from the Caribbean to start their 3rd year. Three of them wanted to do ortho and two of them ended up matching at prestigious programs this year. I haven't asked whether they were constantly having to explain their Caribbean background, but it obviously didn't matter that much. I will say, they both were cool guys, they worked hard, and they had great numbers. Still, it goes to show it can be done. I think transferring in is probably your best bet since it seems to open more doors for interviews.
