I'm just starting to apply for aways in August and September, and I'm hoping ideally to do one in New York City and one in Chicago. Just wanted to ask the guys who have been through this already...what's a good way to find housing for a month in either place? I know most schools will send out an email to their own students who might be looking to sublet their place, but how well does this work? Any other ideas people have had, besides living in the call room?

while living in the call room is a good option, it might be a little hard-core even for ortho. In big cities like you are talking about, it shouldn't be too hard to get a sublet. I'd email the coordinator a couple months in advance and see if they can give you a list from their school - how well this works depends on the school. The best second bet is going onto craig's list - it is generally full of sublets in any big city; usually available on pretty short notice. Off course, you might be sharing an apartment with an axe-murderer but those are the kind of chances you have to take.

If you go to Loyola, there's a lady there that takes in students. She charges $10 a day, feeds you like crazy (but she charges for food). She stays about 15 minutes from the hospital in Oak Park. It cost me about $700 for the month.
