Hello everyone,

I am a current first year medical student. I came into medical school unsure of what I wanted to do, but I have become fascinated with ortho and I think that it is at the top of my list so far. I understand that there is still a long way to go before selecting a field, but I want to be a competitive applicant for this if I get all my other ducks in order (good STEP, grades)

My main question is regarding research. For this upcoming summer, I am doing clinical research in a completely unrelated field. I have secured a competitive grant for it, but I am now committed and bound to doing something unrelated to ortho.

Does this hurt me when it comes to ortho applications? Will they see me as someone who is a confused applicant? Given that it is early in my medical school career, is it 'forgiven' to do research in an unrelated field as long as I am productive?

You will be fine. It is good to have any type of research. It shows that you know how to do it. It will come up in your interviews and good chance, they'll enjoy discussing it with you. My only research was in analytical chemistry and it came up nearly every interview. As you move on in med school, you can always try to get it on some ortho research as well.

the most important thing about this summer is being productive. make it clear your end-goal is an abstract that leads to a paper. if you are going to put in the time, stay proactive and do everything in your power to get the project to the finish line. especially as a junior student, you don't want to be seen as pushy or annoying, just ask your PI and collaborators how you can help get the project finished.

if you are still thinking ortho at the end of MS2, it is probably time to transition to ortho research. while research is becoming an unwritten requirement for ortho residency programs, it is definitely preferable to have some ortho research to talk about. my non-ortho research never came up once during my interviews, probably because I had some ortho projects they would rather discuss since it's something they can relate to.
