How do you present the MD/MBA in residency applications or interviews especially when applying to surgical sub-specialties like Ortho? Do you highlight or minimize the MBA?

Plus, I am somewhat at a crossroad. I have NO research experience (basic science or clinical) and I have a semester period (of MBA program) relatively "free". Now, I have the opportunity to do a prestigious international exchange but I am wondering whether to buckle down and do some research. I am relatively indifferent about research-more interested in health economics/financing/operations.

Will the presence of the MBA and lack of research signal a red flag in my app?

Any thoughts.

Just tell them that your goals are to become the managing partner of your group practice.

Hey orhto-mdmba,

I am current fourth year medical student enrolled in an MD/MBA program. Although I've obviously not been on the interview trial, I have found that the degree has been well received by most attendings at my home institution and away institutions during acting internships.

My long term goal is a leadership position in the orthopaedic surgery department of a university hospital.

I also have a lack of significant research experience. This seems to be a disadvantage in and of itself, but does not seem to be correlated to having the MBA. Since you WILL BE ASKED WHY you got the MBA, I would just construct a thoughtful reply to the question.

Please PM if you have any other questions.
