As a senior picking schools, i have a few options but the crux of my decision is Northwestern and Medical College of Georgia. I realize that many switch preferences of speciality but I'm strongly leaning towards orthopedics.

Since most of you guys are further down the line in terms of applying and going through the match, I wondered what you guys thought about the merits of attending a more reputable medical school.

I realize that an academic superstar is going to do well regardless but I might not be one of those few students.

I find that hard to believe as well. I'm sure that at a number of the programs, it didn't come into play, and I just wasn't a 'match' for them. But, you're also forgetting that it's not a rule-in/rule-out process, it's a ranking process. To not match at a place, it (feasibly) only takes a one spot shift to not match. It wasn't that you weren't good enough for the program, or they didn't like you, they just liked someone better for some reason...

ahh, it's such a twisted process. Painful and arduous.. can't wait for residency to stop, and this will all behind me

Just to add fuel to the fire, here's this from JBJS a few months ago.

Factors Associated with Successful Performance in an Orthopaedic Surgery ResidencyThe Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American). 2009;91:2750-2755.
doi:10.2106/JBJS.H.01243

I just perused the article, but from what I gather these guys found that the only thing that correlated with a "successful" resident was the OITE score and the only thing that correlated with a higher OITE score was the med school's US News rank and Step scores.

Hrm, I was looking at this, and I don't believe that they did a multiple regression on this stat.. Therefor, I believe you are correct in your isolation comment.

Nevertheless, another point in favor of the 'medical school matters'..haha

I wish, personally, it didn't, but that's the way it goes...
