Mid-tier Medical School to "Top" Ortho Programs

This question has not been directly answered in threads I have read, so I thought I would ask...I know many people have this question from other forums

Step 1: 262
Pre-clinical: 2/3 H, 1/3 HP
AOA: dont know yet
Research: Couple posters, 3 pubs (2 ortho, 1 non-ortho), will have more by the time I apply
Took a research year-will get pubs from that

Real question - Given I'm at a mid-tier, public med school: What else do I need to do to match at top rated, big name programs (HSS, Mayo, Jefferson, Harvard, Iowa, Hopkins, WashU, Cleveland Clinic, Duke, UPMC, etc.)? Is AOA a requirement? It seems many applicants will have a great Step score and research...

I think the answer is: no one knows for sure. Most of the programs you mentioned have a website with current residents and often times, recent alumni. Take a look at those people. Anyone from your program? I've often noticed that there appears to be a trend in what schools end up where and it's not happenstance. yeah, some of it's geography, reputation, etc. but a lot of it is relationships between programs.

All of this said, a sub-i demonstrating overall awesomeness and the numbers and letters to back it up can trump anything.

The backgrounds look pretty varied to me...

Thanks for the responses. I somewhat agree with your response in that the backgrounds are varied, however, the majority are still from top medical schools. WashU residents are nearly ALL from top medical schools...

So, given that, is there anything else one can do to make themselves stand out?

I'm a Hopkins resident. We have plenty of residents from non-big name programs. Our program is not cush; we work very hard and therefore what we look for first are hard workers as demonstrated in your calls when you rotate. After that we look at how easy it is to work with how. Next are you fun to hang out with outside the hospital. Next how well can you present a topic at teh end of your rotation. Honestly residents from Harvard are viewed equally as those from Univ. of Whereever. Now after you are ranked based on your rotation experience, then we learn about your Step scores, etc.

So a strong rotation here goes a long way.
