I need some serious advice guys... at that point as an MS3 where i have to pick my aways and electives and really decide which way i'm headed..

Med school: average MD school
Step 1: 258
Grades: preclinical HP and P
Clerkship: 3 HP and 1 P (family med) (HP in surgery... not sure why we haven't gotten our grade feedback yet and our clerkship is set up weird... shelf doesn't count toward grade)
Research: None really, i have a project i've had but not completed and a poster i presented for it... but the project is just low quality.

I'm not sure what to do at this point.. i came into med school wanting ortho, then got discouraged but after step score i figured i have somewhat of a shot. I'm considering ortho because i truly enjoyed it and was passionate about it.. but i'm not sure what kind of shot i have at it and if i should bother applying... i don't think a good step score with everything else average is sufficient..

Also any advice on aways? how many i should do?

You'll be fine, if you're normal and your dean's letter doesn't reflect that a significant % of people are honoring the rotations you high passed in. Do 3 aways and avoid rotating at the top tier places (do 1 reach if you want). Figure out a way to present your project in a positive way on interview day or try to get on another project that will serve as a better talking point before rotations start.

Also, figure out what you're doing wrong and honor the rest of your rotations.
