I am in desperate need of some solid advice/insight, as I am trying to ascertain whether orthopedics is a possibility for me, as well as what steps I can take to further that reality. Basically I went to law school in the US, and I found the job just did not give me any personal satisfaction. So I saved up enough money and went to a caribbean school which was much cheaper than the US counterparts, this was probably bad decision in hindsight. I scored 233 on my Usmle Step 1 and hope to score 250 plus on step 2. I have also published 5 orthopedic articles relating to spinal stenosis and degenerative disk disease. My father also happens to be an orthopedic surgeon not this particularly matters. Basically I am trying to figure out if my dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon is unrealistic because I went to Caribbean school or if there is anyway i can offset this stigmata to make it a possibility. Is there any place that I should attempt to do elective rotations as I am willing to do whatever it takes? I know that no orthopedic programs are Img friendly even if I am a US citizen but maybe there are some that will not toss out an FMG app? I would really appreciate any advice into programs that have possibly accepted an fmg in the past. As well as programs that might look favorably into my publishing/law degree mix. I plan on publishing at least another 5 papers by the time I apply thanks so much for any and all advice. Also if I am being unrealistic and shooting for the stars please dont feel bad in telling me the truth. Any and all advice is welcomed as I need to either make my plan of attack for electives or figure a solid backup thanks.
