Hi all, brand new to this forum but am a long time poster on SDN.

I was wondering if any NYU HJD residents or students/residents who participated in the NYU Summer Ortho Externship could enlighten me about the program. I'm only an M1 but I've got my heart set on ortho and I want to make all the right moves possible. Unfortunately, the program description is pretty vague:

"Your preceptor is responsible for delineating your daily and weekend schedules, as well as helping you pick a topic for presentation to the department at the end of the externship. You will be shadowing your preceptor during your time at our institution; however, your experience should expand beyond that of one on one shadowing...

You will have the opportunity to experience patient care in a variety of settings: the operating room, the private office, and the hospital clinic. You are encouraged to become a part of your preceptor’s orthopaedic team...

Your end of externship presentation will consist of a brief review of a topic of interest. This maybe a topic you come across early in the externship or one that you already have an interest. "

As you can see, it sounds AWESOME. But I asked the director more specifically about research opportunities and his reply was simply "research is there for the taking."

My specific questions are:

1) Is this externship research heavy? Are there enough hours dedicated to research that I can get a poster/pub out of it?
2) I get to work with a preceptor, so any fun and helpful attendings/big names/people with good publication track record that I should be looking for?
3) Any general advice about HJD for a lowly M1?

Incase you're wondering, the reason I'm asking is because I am also waiting to hear back from the HSS program, which isn't for atleast another month. If HJD is a solid program, I may just go for it since I have to start looking for housing.

I really appreciate any feedback. Thanks all.
