What is the general opinion on here about personalizing the personal statement for each program / region to which you are applying? Has anyone heard anything specific about whether this is helpful or worth the effort? I can see the wisdom in making a specific statement pertaining to a program at which you rotated or a program close to your hometown, but what about making individual comments about programs about which you know little about?

Thanks in advance for any knowledge you can share with me.

Personally, I don't see it worth the time. Even if you "personalize" it, it will still be "personally" generic..."I like your program because I like the city, the faculty seems great, there's dedication to teaching, etc." You could say pretty much the same thing for each place.

I just made a generic statement and it was never even brought up. Unless you're Thoreau, I'd do the same. Write something neutral. It may not help much, but it won't hurt you. I'd say the PS is pretty low on most programs' radars.

Spend your time elsewhere....the bar. Good luck
