I'm new to the forum, so I'm not quite sure where this question should be....

Essentially, I was wondering what you guys felt were the negatives of ortho--lifestyle, types of surgeries, patient pop, etc? Basically, what are the current problems and gripes many ortho surgeons have about their field. Thanks in advance.

I'm sure most, depending on the practice setting, complain about the hours and call when they're first starting out. I wouldn't consider it a "problem" though (especially if you really enjoy ortho) - it's pretty common for most jobs to "pay your dues" before moving up the ranks.

Other than that, I think every subspecialty has its own specific annoyance. For instance, hand has workers comp cases. Spine has low back pain. Sports has the pressures from coaches and players' families. Foot and ankle has diabetic feet.

The comment about 'paying your dues' i find interesting...im not one to complain, but after reading that post it made me wonder....when do we stop paying dues??

Like, in college we pay our dues by volubteering, then again in med school in each year
...fhen as an ortho sub i, then as an intern, then as an ortho first year, then as a junior, then as a senior, then as a fellow, and then for several years of starting pracgice...or then as a new attending then as a junior partner, etc etc

I think it never stops until we die.haha

In current times, the "paying your dues" mindset has drifted away in most practices. I'm sure there are still practices out there that may have some of this, but it makes it very hard to recruit new docs to those type of practices. You may "pay your dues" for a short period of time until your are full partner, but that usually occurs in two years or less now.
