I noticed that the ortho programs at Fort Wayne and NYMC-Manhattan got axed this year (for differing reasons). Does anyone know what happens to those residents now? Do they get to transfer to any program they want, or does the ACGME/RRC limit them certain programs or specific regions?

Although I'm sure this isn't the point of your question, from my understanding, St. Vincent's Manhattan is not yet fully set to close. They are in talks with Continuum health partners and have several other offers to "bail out" the hospital. However, with some of the proposals, the residencies may in fact shut down and the hospital would become something like an ambulatory care center with no inpatient care.

From asking around, it's the duty of the program director of each department to make sure each resident gets placed somewhere. The residents don't just get to go anywhere they want... I'm sure there is some sort of process. However, from what I understand, many programs are happy and willing to take extra help if there are spare residents.

yes the fort wayne program is closing at the end of june.

although the RRC states that it will help residents in any capacity possible, they will NOT provide a list of programs with open spots or that were recently allowed to expand. it is up to the resident to contact programs to see if they are interested in having an additional resident. some are open, others are not...others are open but want you to repeat a year or two or do some research for a year. it is a challenging and humbling experience. fortunately, the RRC will allow programs to expand beyond the current allotment to add you on for your tenure at the program where you end up.

i feel fortunate for the program at which i am transferring and we all like the program to where we are going, but none the less it was still a stressful and costly process for people in the ivory tower to play chess with my life and that of my family's....obviously i am still bitter about the process.

furthermore, you are not limited to where you apply, you may just get told they are not interested.

as i alluded to earlier, i am happy with where i am going and see it as an opportunity to see new ways of taking care of orthopedic problems....
