Each year is different....sometimes we get our top ranks...sometimes we go further down the list.
The issue is that for a particular region, many of the same guys are interviewing at the same places. Often, the super studs are ranked to match....and there are generally quite a few. They can only go one place, and it doesnt do a program much good in making their rank list by guessing who will rank them highest, a program SHOULD rank who they want...and often lots of programs want the same handful of people.
So, sometimes the rank list goes down a few slots, some years it doesnt at all... can never predict!
I can say that looking at the candidates that interview and that make the rank list, the top 60% are generally superstrong candidates that would likley do well anywhere they went. Fortunately we are in a field with such a great candidate pool...have you seen what's marching around at internal medicine interview day

Wish it were easier to say. But it really shouldn't concern you, you'll probably never know how low you are.....
