I am new to the site and I have seen other posts refer to residency programs with built in research years. Can anyone give me some info. on how that works and what year of the residency you do the research year? and also any opinions or experience with these programs?

Great list, moquito - very helpful. Some of the programs on the list are 6-year spots that have a year of research built into the program (typically after the intern year) and there are a few that are 7-year spots that have 2 years of research at the beginning. From what I have seen and heard, the 6-year spots are becoming more and more common, but the residents in those positions often have a hard time completing their own projects because they end up just working on whatever one of the staff guys is working on. The 7-year spots ideally allow you to learn more about research and actually create and complete your own projects. It is just a matter of what you are interested in.

I would also add University of Massachusetts to the list. We have 2 spots each year for research (6 yr) and 2 non research spots (5 yr). There is plenty of research opportunities here at Umass. We have a M.D. that does a ton of Outcomes research, she came from Syracuse 2 yrs ago. Several PhDs in the Orthopedic department. Just recently we recuited an Chemist PhD to do Bone Tissue engineering projects. We also have a phD working on Cartilage repair, a new Bone immunology guy is coming form Yale in a few months, and we are working on getting a well known biomechanics guy in the next year or so. Our Chairman is very academic and into research, he has his own RSA project that is up and running, we are one of the only centers in the country that is working on RSA. Also the spine guys here have lots of projects going.

As a 6yr guy, you are free to choose what projects you want to work on for the year. Either a new one or something that another person have started. At the end of the Year, we have a thesis day for the department where the 2 research residents, and all the PGY-4 and Chiefs are required to present a research project that they have been working on. All the faculty of the department will show up for it.

What is not well known about Umass is that the Bone basic science department here is one of the best in the Country. Dr. Lian and Dr. Stein are here and they are both very well known in Bone metabolism research. So there is plenty of research opportunities here at Umass if you are interests. PM me if you have any other questions.

Thanks

Thanks guys - I was wondering from the list which programs are 6 and which are 7 years and also I am not finding all of these on ERAS. Are they all filled through the match? The UMASS research program sounds impressive - are those spots harder to obtain if I don't already have a strong research resume? Do they have any research training built in or do you just have to learn as you go?

I know University of Mississippi, Wake Forest, and Med Coll of Georgia are 7-year spots. Those three are not in ERAS and require a separate application mailed to the department. You can get more information on the application from their department websites. I think every other program on the list has 6-year spots that are filled through the match. I can't say anything specifically about UMass, but the research spots aren't necessarily harder to obtain without a strong research background. It is often hard for medical students to get heavily involved in research and the more important factor is your interest level in learning how to implement and complete good research projects.

I'm a fourth year med student at Mississippi and done work in the ortho lab over the past three years. I've seen the Research, 7 year pathway develop here. Although the position is new, it seems to be well organized and supported. Each resident has the opportunity to obtain a phd before beginning their intern year. Currently, they have two post doc fellows that are good guys who work hard and are more than willing to help out younger guys like myself who are interested in ortho. Anyone interested in this 7 year spot check it out on the web at...

Thanks fish for the kind words...We do have a great set up down here with an incredible amout of support from the department... Chairman all the way down the line. The opportunity here at Mississippi to obtain the PhD, work in basic science, as well as participate in clinical research makes this program unique. The 2 years of research is well organized and gives the resident solid training in how to evaluate and conduct quality research.

If anyone is interested in the program the application is separate from ERAS and is due Nov. 1st. A great opportunity to obtain a skill set that is becoming more and more important to our specialty.

Any questions don't hesitate to PM me.
