So there's this guy in my class applying to orthopaedics this year who did an away rotation at a well-regarding institution in the southeast that everyone I know has had nothing but good things to say about. I was considering doing an away rotation there and asked him about his experience. I considered him a pretty good friend, so I stupidly believed him when he said he was abused (getting to hospital at 3am to make the list on the entire service, Q3 call, etc) and that the program wasn't as good as it used to be (big faculty just left, one questionable class of residents, etc). Taking his advice, I didn't go.

So now, I run into resident at another program from the school (with 3 of his good friend in the program), who tells me my friend is full of crap and that many of these things were outright lies. This program is pretty notorious for mostly taking rotators.

Moral of the story: you sadly can't even trust your friends in this twisted game. Yes, I was stupid for taking his advice, but I thought he would have the most candid, up-to-date advice available.

folks like that will not make it, if he needs to lie to you so you dont rotate their and take his spot, he proably will not match there anyway. Dont lose yourself in this process, if you want ortho you will get it. Put it in prayer and do what you need to do. May not come immediately, but if you truely want it, it will happen.

To add to HNIC08's good comment:

Everybody has a bias, especially students who live and breathe ortho every night. Maybe your friend was exposed to residents who weren't happy about their program...there are people like that in every program. You just never know until you go there yourself. The match process is tough, but don't get paranoid. Don't hate your friend...sure maybe he lied to you, or maybe he just had a crappy experience.

There's competition before residency, there's competition during residency, there's competition after residency...you can't be skeptical about everyone all the time. Concentrate on making yourself look good and you will match.

Just a public service from me, to all the applicants this year:
All the programs I am applying to are horrible places to train. You all should not apply or not bother interviewing if you've already applied.

No hidden agendas here.
