Most aways Ive been looking at don't accept applications until May so they can place their own students first. Are there spots left for the visiting student with no home program (yours truly) in the coveted august/september blocks? I guess my question is, I'm I going to be able to get my first choice at a schools like MUSC, kentucky, tufts, UAB that don't place away students until late or should I apply to multiple programs like this for each spot and take what I get? I hope this isn't too confusing.

i can't speak about those programs specifically, but i did an away in aug-sept with no problem. (of course, i started talking to the program in january) make sure the program knows you are going to apply and find out exactly what day they are taking apps and submit (by fax if possible) that day, as it is usually first-come, first-served. depending on app fees (some have a fee for each block you apply for) i would apply to the 2 or 3 programs you want for all of the times you have available, then cancel the extras. but if you do this MAKE SURE YOU CANCEL. it's crappy to hold those extra spots. good luck

cheers.
