how much does loving to watch/play sports contribute to the practice of ortho? Obviously there are many non-sports-related aspects of ortho, but is athletics a common bond between practitioners and even patients? Is it really a major part of the culture? I know it seems like a naive question, but any input appreciated

I disrespect you as a male if you can't talk to me about sports or throw a spiral. Otherwise, what can we talk about? Your home life? Please. I demand to know everyone's max bench, and I personally run push up, pull up, and ab sessions in the call room. If the testosterone is too much for you, step into my office.

I agree with Jeff Smoker. Pushups are part of my daily routine, and nothing gets me going in the morning after a night on call than hammering out a 100 pushups. I follow this with 2 scoops of MetRx protein powder in my coffee. I would do pullups as well, but the bunkbeds in the call room are too short to get full stretch out of my lats and biceps.

Especially in small towns where I am from, I definitely believe that one of the orthopaedic surgeon's base patient populations is kids falling, playing sports etc and sustaining injuries. They also often provide sports physicals and coordinate with other physicians of the community to provide that service. It serves as a referral base and enhances your standing in the community. A love of sports will only enhance this. My opinion.

Who honestly dislikes sports..... anyone?
