SLR would probably best be labelled a "community" program rather than "academic," though many residents go on to do fellowships and there certainly is research going on. They operate a lot, with many cases going every day and PA's helping out on the floor. Some attendings trained at Columbia, and Columbia medical students still do Ortho rotations there. They have a hand fellowship and are exceptionally strong in that department. Not sure about other fellowships. There are two sites : Roosevelt at 59th and 10th ave and St. Luke's at 114 and Amsterdam - both are very good locations as far as Manhattan is concerned. I think the residents may even get subsideized high-rise housing at the Roosevelt site. Some attendings operate at both sites, some just one. There is at least one amb surg center though I am not sure how much time the residents spend there.
Overall, a strong clinical program in a very good location. Not sure about accreditation issues or other rumors I've heard floating around this site.
Hope this helps.
