Spoiler alert: no sexual references in this post.

Hey guys, I will be an MS1 this fall, and I'm interested in ortho. I am not dead set on it, but it's definitely at the top of the list after all the shadowing/reading/questioning/surgery observing I've done.

Of course, being so competitive, killing the academics of med school is a must, and I will definitely bust my butt to do that (ok, a slightsexual reference). But this question is in regards to the "everything else"...

How can I increase my exposure to orthopods at my institution? Should I do solely ortho research? Attend ortho grand rounds? Shadow MORE orthopods? Walk up to every orthopod I see and feverishly smile and wave?

In other words, how can I suck up and get myself noticed, without actual sucking up to get myself noticed haha I would just like to form some relationships within my ortho dept. I'm guessing that can't hurt.

Any advice would help, I'm open to opinions and criticism! Thanks for your time!

The best thing you can do is do well academically. I would definitely do research between MS1 and 2 and continue it as long as you can. If you get involved in research, make SURE you finish anything you agree to.

Other than that I would suggest being present without being annoying or overbearing. Do not pester the ortho residents but occasionally if you have an off day, ask if there is anything you could watch in the OR with them. I think attending grand rounds or morning conference is a great idea to be noticed and showing an interest in the field (you may learn something too).

I can't tell by the tone of your post (but I feel the need to mention this due to 2 sexual references in your post), but if you are a female, do NOT sleep with the residents. It won't help you and will probably hurt you once the relationship ends.

You are way ahead of the game already, so if you stay involved and don't annoy anyone you will be in great shape. Congratulations on finding the best field of medicine so early in your career.

I agree. Research is a great way to get to know the residents. Going in to see a surgery once every couple of months is good idea too. Grand rounds is a perfect opportunity to show your fac but honestly you shouldn't be talking or asking questions during grand rounds. You don't have to get to know all of the residents either. You just need to know 1 or 2 of them (preferably the current pgy2s who will be your chief when you are a 4 th year). Honestly as long as you are always keeping it in the forefront of your mind to nit be annoying you probably won't be.

I got to know many of the residents at my home program by doing research in the same lab as they do during their research rotation. This is a two-for-one. You get Orthopedic research under your belt, and you get to know some of the residents. If you can find out which lab they work out of and they will let you start a project there, I think that would be a good idea. Also, befriend the 2nd and 3rd year med students that want to do ortho. Many of them will be ortho residents some day!

I would suggest trying to find out from a faculty member or resident if you could perhaps follow the consult/ER resident around one night. You probably won't be able to help too much, but it shows an interest and you might learn to splint, or suture, or even learn some basic fracture stuff that will help you when you rotate as a three. If you come back for more and arent slowing them down you can be a help. I don't mind teaching if I am not super busy. I let a first year put in a traction pin a couple weeks ago, but I know he had come by a couple of times and actually was more useful in splinting than some of the ER residents i'd corner to help occasionally. Even being a gopher to grab supplies can be a huge help when we're busy. You'll learn alot more taking consults with the junior resident than you will in the OR.
