I was wondering if anyone on this board is or was a resident at a new orthopaedic residency (especially if they were only starting with PGY-1 and no upper levels). More specifically, I am curious as to what your experience has been? What are the advantages/disadvantages? Would you go this route again?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't think there has been a new program added in the last 5 years, so replies might be slim. I assume that this is in regards to U of South Florida? If it is, I am sure that they will have no problem getting a great program going. They already have residents from other parts of the country rotating in for trauma, so having their own program seems natural. Also, they had a program back in the day, so it is not totally new ground that they are breaking.

Thanks for your help. What would residency be like (esp. during the first few years) if you had no senior residents to teach/mentor you during your junior years?

I have recently decided to try and obtain an ortho spot though I am currently interviewing for this year's match in a different specialty. I see my choices as

1. getting into a new program outside the match
2. scrambling - anyone have any idea what kind of programs usually go unfilled?
3. sitting out a year, though it seems it gets tougher to match from this position
