I'm a student at UNC. I agree with the post above completely. The preceptor experience seems to allow unique experience, mostly for the better. When I ask the residents why the ended up at UNC, almost unanimously the answer is that everyone gets along so well, they felt "at home," or some variation of that. Chapel Hill is a great place to live. And yes, Dirshl is amazing. We have several great faculty . . . admittedly I probably know the most student-friendly of them, but the ones I know are all excellent teachers. I don't know of any problems in the department or deficiencies in the program. The only couple downsides to consider relate to the hospital itself. Compared to the private hospitals I have rotated at (as I imagine all public-private comparisons would go), UNC is painfully slow and bureaucratic. For the resident, that appear to mean doing a lot of things themselves that should be delegated to support staff and terribly long OR turn-over times.
Hope that helps!
