Hey guys, I'll be doing an away rotation at Univ. of Chicago in the fall. Just like the other SubI posts, anything helpful that previous rotators or current residents can give would be great! Thanks.

You do 1-week on four different services (this is how they did it last year).
1. Tumor with Dr. Peabody (chairman) and Dr. Hayden -- Interesting pts and
fantastic attendings (read other posts about Peabody's greatness -- (all true) you will have fun on this service and learn a lot, all attendings on this service are very down-to-earth
2. Sports with Dr. Terry and Dr. Ho -- excellent physical exam teaching, again fantastic attendings (service can be medium or heavy depending on week)
3. Joints with Dr. Manning (resident recruitment) -- excellent service, Manning will make you laugh while you are working hard
4. Foot/Ankle -- Note: foot/ankle run by Dr. Toolan (residency director) -- very friendly and one of the best teachers

Lectures are everyday in the morning (time varies) -- rounding before lecture. Call is usually divided up by the number of med students on (ie if there are a total of 4 sub-I -- you will be q4 for call) However, this year there may be quite a few sub-I(s). Thus, your call schedule may be different.

Hours vary by service and week. You will work hard, but also learn a lot in your month at University of Chicago. There is a lot of teaching going on by attendings and residents. There was no malignant pimping at all (no one on the faculty or house staff is that way).

The current class of R2 (who you will take call with) are fantastic. If you are rotating soon, you will be fortunate to rotate with a great bunch of guys. I have not met the upcoming R2s.

Feel free to PM with any other questions.

Is this still the case for aways at UChicago? I am worried that they have a bunch of rotators, because I literally applied last week (late July!!) and they said they could take me in either October or November.

So either it is nobody wants to rotate there, or they take a ton of people. I have a dilemma because to go to UChicago, i'd have to drop another away at a place which I like less, but takes less rotators and id probably be more competetive at. Any help is appreciated.

Is it worth doing the away?

I'm on the rotation right now. Only 3 of us. Two visitors and one home student. Dr. Manning is definitely hilarious. I'm only one week in but it's been a great experience so far.

Are they really flexible enough that they let you really select your own dates?

I also am wondering if historically they interview ALL of their rotators. I am not that competetive on an applicant (sub-235 Step 1, no honors, etc.) and don't want to waste an away rotation.

I don't know anything about choosing your own dates. You should probably call them about that one. Don't know about interviewing ALL of their rotators either. It seems that I remember reading on these boards that they don't make rotators come back for an interview. Don't quote me on that though.
