Can anyone comment about rumors that UTSA is a program that is going downhill and in a hurry? Some of the faculty at my school have spoken very poorly of the program and say that it's not worth doing an away rotation there. Thanks and good luck on match day to y'all.

This is not true. Daniel Carlisle, MD was just made vice chairman. He is also the program director. He is a total resident advocate and constantly monitors residents OR and clinical experiences so that they can make changes on the fly if needed. The faculty there is stable. This is a solid program. I've found that what faculty consider poor and what residents and perspective residents call poor are two different things. If you want to operate a lot, get great clinical experience, and work with great residents, this is the place for you. If you want to hold some famous attendings retractors and spend most of your time in clinic and rounding, then maybe this isn't the place for you.

i second that. they just passed their site review, so probation is no longer an issue. got an excellent vibe from interviewing there. Carlisle cannot operate anymore due to medical limitations, so you have a full time administrator that is a trained orthopod. can you think of a better person to have running a residency program? no ego at that program, but get access to rockwood, green, delee, etc. median home proce in SA is around 95K. could be a great time to slip into this program while others are still judging it poorly from old data.

cheers (literally)

Handjob & RocketScientist,
First off thanks. Also I was wondering what your personal connection is rocketscientist; being that your location reads Nevada. Thanks again.

no personal connection, just lots and lots of research. i tried to arm myself with as much info as possible to make my ROL somewhat relevant to reality (as i see it, of course). also, with no home program i did not have to sift through the opinions (prejudices?) of ortho advisors or chairman, so i have a very short memory in terms of a program's past transgressions. hope that helps.

cheers

i interviewed at utsa, and one of my classmates happily matched there recently. its a solid program, currently in favorable status by the acgme and rrc. utsa is not on probation anymore. they have taken enormous strides to mend any shortcomings in the program. i agree that carlisle is a true resident advocate and an all-around good guy. he sets the tone in the program. san antonio is a decent town. the hospital is in a very nice location within the city. the residents claim to have early operative experience, and seemed very pleased with the training. i think you would be in good shape if you rotated and matched there. beware advice from your home faculty. they are a great resource, but often have outdated/biased info. check with several people, including this site and current residents, before you form an opinion.
