I am considering a Vanderbilt away rotation. On their website, they have specific courses one can apply to.

Any suggestions as to departments or even specific surgeons that are great to work with?

Just FYI, a guy at my school -- great guy, great scores -- rotated at Vandy and did NOT get an interview invite. Some programs are notorious for only interviewing half of their rotators or less, and I'd personally be pretty upset if I'd worked my tail off for a month and not gotten an interview.

I was told by a resident there that they had 45+ rotators last year and the PD didn't want to interview more than 25. A guy I worked with that month didn't get an interview and he was awesome...nice guy, easy to get along with, and heard he had great scores from other people at his school. So I know it happens...

Vandy is famous for this, guy my year had 250+, great guy, 4.0, hard worker, etc. No interview (probably cause he was "state" schooled all the way)

They shouldn't take as many guys for rotations if they aren't going to at least interview them

P.S. he matched at a great top-notched program and is now the president of the housestaff, >95% OITEs, etc

I did not rotate at Vandy, did not make 250+, and I have been state schooled throughout undergrad and medical school. I received an interview invitation so there must be something more to this than is immediately apparent. Although, the whole selection process can seem fairly random at times.

You don't have to be private schooled or anything like that to get an interview there...just like any program, you just have to have what they're looking for. If you just look at their intern class, I think they have two or three public school guys. The PD makes no regret that they are in the business of producing academic orthopaedic surgeons, so research is obviously a big plus to them. They have a phenomenal program with a good group of guys, and it is still has the best attending-resident relationships I've ever seen.

Oh, and I think it's great that they don't interview everyone that rotates there. Why interview someone when you're not actually considering them? My program is interviewing several rotators from all around the nation that have absolutely no shot of getting in as a "courtesy"....and that sucks for them and their bank accounts.

Agree with above. Don't beat up Vandy because they don't interview everyone that rotates. They are in the position (as are most programs) to be very selective when choosing residents. As long as an interview isn't guaranteed or even implied as a reward for rotating, then they should be able to have as many rotators as they choose and select the ones which fit the program best. There is nothing worse than going through the hassle and expense of an interview, sometimes at the untold expense of turning down another interview on the same day, when you realistically have no shot of being ranked anywhere near where it takes to match. It's even worse not to even know that you're in that situation.

This is the most important advice for doing an away at Vandy.
